Ashes to Ashes by Tami Hoag

Review by Stephanie Wright

Another serial killer made his way into Minneapolis. Perfecting his "art" with each new murder, he believes he is making a name for himself that will rival those of Bundy, and the Boston Strangler. The "Cremator" as he has been dubbed by the press, thrives on the attention his madness brings and has plans for the moment his identity is known by all.

His identity may come sooner than later because Angie DiMarco has seen the "Cremator's" face. The only person unfortunate enough to bear witness to the latest atrocity committed by the "Cremator". Angie is now unwillingly in police custody. One of the newest puppets to have her chain yanked by city brass. Angie nor the victim/witness assigned to her case is playing their games and they're getting nowhere fast.

Kate Conlan, a former FBI agent, now a victim/witness advocate is the lucky lady forced to take Angie as her client. Her superiors try to bully her into forcing a description of the killer. Unluckily for them, Kate's job is an advocate, not a puppeteer. Kate takes her job very seriously. The first two murders, those of prostitutes, didn't warrant this kind of attention to Kate's superiors. That infuriates her making her more stubborn in her resolve not to allow this tragedy to become a circus event with her client as one of the circus freaks.

When the latest victim becomes Jillian Bondurant, daughter of billionaire Peter Bondurant, all bets are off in the hunt for the murderer. Special Agent John Quinn, the FBI's best mind hunter has been called in as well. There is no stopping him in his relentless quest to bring the bastard to justice. After many traumatizing years of chasing murdering psychos, and an endless array of innocent victims, Quinn is haunted by his own demons that he won't let anyone else know or hear about. Some of these demons are from a painful past he shared with Kate. All of them are slowly pushing him to insanity.

Time is running out and the killer has become brazen in his butchering of innocent women. Kate is the next and final piece of "artwork" on the killer's list. Will Kate find out who the "Cremator" is before he finds her?

Tami Hoag is a wonderful writer from Minneapolis who expertly weaves together a page-turner that will keep the reader guessing. The reader won't be able to put this book down until the identity of the killer is found. Hoag keeps the reader guessing because just when it appears the identity is known...she blindsides the reader with another twist. When the reader does finally find out who it is, the reader is in such suspense that the book will not be put down until the final word.
