ARTIST OF THE MONTH

FEMMUSIC realizes that it can not possibly cover all artists it receives information about. To remedy this problem, each month, each staff member of FEMMUSIC will be asked to submit an artist or band whose link will be posted here.

January 2003 - Piss Ant

Talking about Piss Ant is only adding a voice to the choir. Piss Ant is already doing everything right and appearing everywhere. Their material is punk, rock and it's fun! Songs like "Sexx Junkie" and "Muder Highway" excite the senses. Listening to Piss Ant is like being the gawker of a car accident. It's crude, it's bloody, and you can't turn away. For more information and information on their album Piss Off go to www.piss-ant.com

November 2002 - Cindy Kalmenson

Cindy Kalmenson is funny and honest. In live performance she wears her heart on her sleeve and is willing to talk about how much of her music is about relationships. She makes fun of herself and of men in her music including such songs as “Hobo Rock Star” and “Man of My Dreams.” Kalmenson wears an infectious smile and her music spreads that easily. August 2002 - Patty Blee

Patty Blee's CD, Disguise, is a crossover hit waiting to happen. The songs speak country and rock in a fun, and moving way. Her songs are honest and sincere. They stick out like, "Soul Dancing", and "I Believe In This Love." They are touching perspectives on relationships. Blee is destined for something bigger and better with this album. For more information visit www.pattyblee.com

July 2002 - Kristi Martel

The common and despised stereotype is the redheaded songwriter at a piano being compared to Tori Amos. This comparison should not be considered for Kristi Martel. Her lyrics speak through this record with their own tongue. Her voice has a brassy sly accent that gives the songs a risky edge. Martel's CD, Brave Enough, has songs from seven years and bounces between the time periods and the moods. For more information visit www.kristimartel.com

June 2002 - Marjorie Thompson

The debut CD, Driven to Distraction, from Marjorie Thompson is finger-picking blues, folk, roots that dives into the listener. This is a CD that can take anyone back, but also take them forward. Thompson has learned from master's and demonstrates that in this CD. For more information visit www.mosugarmusic.com

May 2002 - Cindy O'Neil

Jazz, blues, rock and heart are just a few of the things you'll hear in Cindy O'Neil's CD Flight. O'Neil is a singer-songwriter, and writer in Canadian Musician Magazine. Her music plays beyond "pop" music with jazz elements and instrumentation. For more information visit www.cindyoneil.com

April 2002 - Sylvia Tosun

Sylvia Tosun has been taught at Juilliard and has performed with the USO. Her newest CD is produced Miklos, who has also worked with Celine Dion, and Jennifer Lopez. Tosun's new CD, Anthem: National Anthem of Our World Volume 1, is risk. It is a collection of ten of the national anthems to different countries. Performing any national anthem is a risk in offending not only the country, but the song. Tosun does neither. Every sports event in the nation should open with her version of "The Star Spangled Banner." Her arrangements are creative and dignified. As a pop/rock album this is the last one from listener's minds. It should be the first. For more information visit www.sylviatosun.com

January 2002 - Carol Duboc

Reading the resume of Carol Duboc is reading a "Who's who of music." She has sung, written and arranged songs for Patti LaBelle, George Duke, Chante Moore, and many more. Her songs have gone gold and platinum for other artists. Now her first solo work, With All That I Am, has already struck the right chord. It is already a top seller on Smoothjazz.com. Her jazz has hints of urban R&B and invites the listener with sultry dripping vocals. For more information visit www.carolduboc.com

Artist of Year 2001 - Susan Robkin

When FEMMUSIC announced our top independent artists of 2001 more than one voice asked, "Where is Susan Robkin?" When FEMMUSIC heard Robkin we understood. Robkin is pop rock at its best. She sings with emotion and power, and leaves the listener desperately wanting more. Her CD, How to Say Goodbye should sit in every collection. Pay particular attention to songs like "Sunflower", "Everything You/Everything Me", and Broken Inside." For more information visit www.susanrobkin.com

August 2001 - Newcomers Home

Their first album, Miles From Saint Louise, catches some of that energy of live performance. They defy a label, but have a voice. For more information visit www.newcomershome.com

July 2001 - The Hissyfits

In the world of pop punk the Hissyfits are not unknown. Their recently completed CD, Letters from Frank, is testament to that. The New York based Hissyfits have a hard driving edge and their CD’s have an element missing from big label music, i.e. fun. The Hissyfits are not a band to ask “Where are they going?” They are a band to ask, “Where will you be next?” In a time of corporate pop manufactured to the masses, The Hissyfits are a return to punk’s best days. June 2001 - Rachel and Andy

Rachel and Andy – Rachel and Andy are not the typical duo most would imagine. Originally playing as a cover band in Athens, GA, Rachel and Andy took off like a rocket when the moved to Denver. It is easy to see why. They are moving from being a folk duo to a rock band that Chrissie Hynde would be proud of. Making that crossover is tough sometimes, but for Rachel Simring & Andy Ard it is as natural as their stage presence. They do have an album with their acoustic duo work including songs such as “The Doctor and the Mrs.,” and “What Was That Song?” They also just completed a new demo.
