City Spotlight

By Elizabeth Nitz

City: Atlanta GA, home of the Braves, Georgia State and Georgia Tech universities, and a wonderfully busy, varied music scene.

One Artist: Angela Motter

Angela has been a staple of the Atlanta scene for more than 10 years, mixing blues with jazz and rock & roll. She played a mean electric guitar at Eddie's Attic in Atlanta on July 3,and proved that her voice has not lost the powerful edge from her acclaimed CD Pleasure and Pain. She also included some strong, creative new songs, expecting to release another album in the next year or so. For more information visit www.angelamotter.com

One Venue: Eddie's Attic

Eddie Owen opened Eddie's Attic 10 years ago in the remains of a lingerie department. His dream was to create a club that nurtured local and touring artists and gave the community a low-cost, friendly place to hang out and hear music. He soon discovered that rock bands brought the crowds and moved the alcohol, but the acoustic scene was more his speed so he changed the format from "club" to "listening room." Musicians loved the quiet, attentive atmosphere and the bar, lounge, and back porch teemed with regulars. Driven by acts like the Indigo Girls, Shawn Mullins, and more recently Michelle Malone and John Mayer, Eddie's Attic has a reputation for hosting the best of the acoustic scene. Now under new ownership, the Attic is experimenting
with a bit more variety but remains dedicated to the original charm and outstanding quality of music. For more information visit www.eddiesattic.com

One Event: Pride

June means a number of things in Atlanta -- heat, humidity, rapid kudzu growth, and one of the largest Gay Pride festivals in the country. 2002 outdid previous years, generating a record crowd and featuring an incredible lineup of musicians. Two stages were set up at opposite ends of Piedmont Park, with booths representing all manner of crafts, services and activism lining the paths between them.Highlights included crowd favorites Michelle Malone, Jennifer Nettles, Fat Chance, and Halcyon.
