weaklazyliar, the talented un-aptly named pop group from Atlanta, has a die-hard following and a new 2002 release. The November Diaries is a mellow, diverse collection of creative songwriting, showcasing some of Atlanta's most respected musicians. Fronted by Gerlinda Grimes on vocals and acoustic guitar, wll, as they are known, also sports Ryan Taylor on keyboards, Joe Knoll on drums and Chris Mathewson on bass & electric guitar. They are backed by local heroes Paul Melançon, Gina Henschen, Page Waldrop and Sheila Doyle.
Knowing when to stop is essential in any art form. The November Diaries is very well written without being over-produced, staying true to weaklazyliar's professional but indie sound. The album begins quietly, almost unassumingly, with introspective "The Story Of My Life." Gerlinda's soft, lush voice greets the listener and provides sustenance for the journey ahead. The second song, "Blue Suit," starts with a funky programmed loop, grounds itself with acoustic guitar, then builds into a tight, driving rock number.
Themes of rain, pre-Christmas decorations and loneliness run through the album. "Might Have Been" has the most intriguing lyrics, playing on the fear of futility: "I'll be the one who holds the door when you rush past with empty hands I'll be there when you say goodbye to someone you'll always love Give up on me; I'm everything you might have been."
No, aliens are not landing
on your stereo. The eerie sound of Ryan's singing bowl moves through the final
track, "Everything is True," and has to be heard to be believed. The
simple, dark melody is accompanied by rain and Sheila Doyle's exquisite violin.
