The third
album for this IndieGrrl artist starts wonderfully, with Liz's powerful, refined
voice and easy acoustic folk sound with a touch of old-style country. The music
changes throughout the album with the addition of the piano, more percussion,
and more speed. "Shakespeare Avenue", about a housewife turned poet,
blends a catchy melody with Liz's storybook lyrics and gorgeous voice in the
spirit of Matraca Berg.
With "That's What It Is" and "Written on the
Body" the tone takes a sharp turn. Both songs are beautiful, mournful and
laced with desperation. The first depicts a mother's attempt to protect her
son from eminent danger, and in second she sings, "You'd take everything
and give it all away for one more ordinary day." The next few songs are
sad ballads, then the mood lightens as the album finishes with a couple well-placed
covers including jazz favorite "My Old Flame."
