Putomayo’s The Laura Love Collection is an excellent
introduction to the dynamic performer (song-writer, vocalist, and bassist) who
describes her rock and roots musical sound as "Afro-Celtic."
Featuring eleven songs from two of Love’s older independently released albums,
Pangaea (1992) and Helvetica Bold (1990), Love is in strong voice
as she sings, yodels, and chants on songs that have been part of her live show
over the years. Included among those numbers are songs such as
"All Our Lives," "Less is More, " "Wayfaring Stranger," and "A Ha Me a Riddle I
Day."
Since this compilation’s original release, Seattle-based
Love signed with Mercury Records and most recently with Zoe/Rounder. Later
releases such as Fourteen Days (her most recent), Shum Ticky and Octoroon
have brought her acclaim. However, this collection is an excellent way to
discover early material from this highly energetic, exhilarating, and uplifting
artist.
