By Alex Teitz
Dar
Williams is one of the strong new voices in "pop" folk today. She
has been steadily gaining a bigger and diverse audience with her four albums,
but her live show has always been the key. This year she released Out There
Live which is a collection of some of her best live songs.
Out There Live is for the Dar Williams'
fan. It is a nineteen song, seventy minute ride through Williams collection
including new songs like "I Won't Be Your Yoko Ono" to older classics
like "As Cool As I Am" and "The Ocean." All of them demonstrate
Williams wit and creativity in songwriting, and developing hooks that truly
bring the audience in. There are a few cases of Williams introductions to songs
which are humorous, truthful and insightful. These moments of pause (often during
tuning) are one of the trademarks of Williams' style.
Out There Live is not without fault however.
The length of the CD can be a challenge for even the most dedicated of fans.
In addition more insights as to the origins of some of the obscure tracks would
have been helpful. One wishes Williams has edited further to come up with a
shorter CD with the best of the best, and more elements of why Williams live
shows are events.
Out There Live will appeal to the die hard
Williams fan, but is not the album to introduce someone to Williams. For more
