By Elizabeth Nitz
Atlanta singer/songwriter Angela Motter takes her music very personally. She works issues out by writing excellent music about them. The telling "IsItABoyIsItAGirl" brings her feelings about her own gender identity to the forefront with lyrics like, "You're a girl, I'm a boy, I'm a man, you're my wife."
She is as comfortable in her skin as she is in multiple musical genres. The first track, "Pleasure and Pain," is pure rock and includes bass, keyboard, and sequencing help from the talented Ricky Keller, who also produced the album with Angela. "I'm Free" has a reggae feel with rap lyrics provided by Faceman. Michelle Malone and Dede Vogt, Atlanta veteran singer/songwriters, can be heard in the background.
"Better Get Used To It" takes a sharp turn back into the age of disco featuring layered vocals, an infectious dance beat, and the wonderful Tom Grose on the Hammond B-3. "Just Around The Corner," is a gorgeous, heartbreaking ballad with an elegant muted trumpet part. Her voice switches from gritty to sweet at a moments notice and is full of the obvious passion she has for her music.
"Damn Your Eyes"
is as close as Angela gets to a pop song and frankly it's too good for the radio.
She pours emotion into lyrics like, "I guess I see what I want to see,
or is my heart just deceiving me? And with that look I know so well, I fall
completely under your spell" while the electric guitars wail. This entire
album is spellbinding.
