Amanda Garrigues’ sophomore release is a pleasure to behold. Garrigues’
clear vocals are strong and have a punch. Garrigues is joined by David McMahon
on bass, and guitars, Eric Gardner on percussion and drums, and Eric Steinberg
on electric guitar. The star undoubtedly is Garrigues.
Garrigues has mastered the subtleties of songwriting in GroundSwell. In songs about the end of
relationships, and abuse she shines. Notably is “By My Scars” about the
loneliness of a bad relationship ended. The cold and darkness of this loss is
given to the listener. “Blackfisted” is a song filled with strong rhythms
reminiscent of John Cougar Mellencamp but tells the dark story of a woman trying
to hide abuse in denial. “1994” is an upbeat song about an affair.
