Dayna Blitz - Can't Go Back (baby blitz music 2001)

By Elizabeth Nitz

The many faces of Dayna Blitz come through in her debut CD, Can't Go Back. Set to a synth dance beat, the title track might lull the listener into thinking Dayna wants to leap into the teen pop scene. Until the second song, "Time Will Fly." Now Melissa Ethridge has competition. The earnest, harmonica-laden country rocker begs, "wake up, it all passes by … wake up or time will fly."

In the heartbeat of a pounding drum loop, Dayna changes the tone to alt-playful in "So Bored," an ode to a stale bar scene. She sings, "five drinks in the hour, still on her feet. One more ought to do it, make the night complete." Her voice matches the power of the synthesizers and then falls to a whisper at the end as the instruments fade out.

"Soul Train" is another complete change, with a horn section to round out its whimsical jazz feel. Her voice becomes silky and smooth. And just to prove she can, she ends with a soft, slow, heartbreaker of a ballad where lyrics like, "Hey baby, do you have any idea what you're doing to me? You're killing me," drip with rugged emotion.

She is uncompromisingly comfortable in each style, and despite her obvious talent, refuses to take it all too seriously.
